U.N. Report Authored by Prof. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin Cited in Middle East Monitor
A United Nations report authored Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin was cited in the Middle East Monitor in light of 11 detainees who were released on January 6 from prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. There are now 15 prisoners who remain at the facility, made notorious in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. Prof. Ní Aoláin visited the facility in 2023 in her role as a U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms while Countering Terrorism. In her report, she acknowledged that the bulk of those sent to the facility “were brought without cause and had no relationship whatsoever with the events that took place on 9/11.” She was also told by both detainees former and current that “she had arrived ‘too late’.”
