Prof. Sapna Kumar Elected to the American Law Institute
Professor Sapna Kumar, Henry J. Fletcher Professor of Law, has been elected as a member of the American Law Institute (ALI). ALI elects individuals who reflect the excellence and diversity of today's legal profession. ALI's membership consists of eminent judges, lawyers, and law professors from all areas of the United States and from many foreign countries, selected on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law.
ALI drafts, discusses, revises, and publishes Restatements of the Law, Model Codes, and Principles of Law that are enormously influential in the courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education.
By participating in the Institute’s work, its distinguished members have the opportunity to influence the development of the law in both existing and emerging areas, to work with other eminent lawyers, judges, and academics, to give back to a profession to which they are deeply dedicated, and to contribute to the public good.
Professor Kumar joined the Law School faculty in fall 2023. Her scholarship focuses on international law and administrative law issues relating to patent rights. Her most recent research examines how patent rights can hinder access to medicine during public health emergencies. Her article "Contractual Solutions to Overcome Drug Scarcity During Pandemics and Epidemics" (with Ana Santos Rutschman) was published in Nature Biotechnology and her follow-up book chapter "Planning for Pandemic and Epidemic-Related Drug Scarcity" (with Ana Santos Rutschman), was published in Intellectual Property, COVID-19, and the Next Pandemic: Diagnosing Problems, Developing Cures (Cambridge University Press).
