Prof. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin’ Quoted in Washington Post About Turkey’s War on Terror Efforts
Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, Regents Professor and Robina Chair in Law, Public Policy, and Society, was quoted in the Washington Post about Turkey’s “war on terror” that has drawn extensively from the U.S. counterterrorism playbook. According to U.N. documents, human rights groups, Western security officials and public records, Turkey has used secret detentions, terrorism watch lists, asset seizures and torture — including at least one reported case of waterboarding — against exiles. International monitors and security officials said the abuse of counterterrorism capabilities has added to the complicated legacy of the response to the 9/11 attacks. Prof. Ní Aoláin said, “Twenty-plus years after 9/11, you would anticipate a diminished” reliance on the terms and tactics associated with the war on terror. Instead, what we find is a repurposing, reappropriation and acceleration of those methods by backsliding democracies and authoritarian regimes.”
