Alessandra Wilson: A Scholarship Recipient Dedicated to Serving the Underserved

Meet Alessandra Wilson, a 3L at Minnesota Law, who is deeply passionate about public service. Wilson’s decision to attend law school stemmed from a deep desire to tackle systemic injustices and provide direct legal support to those who need it most. “As a Mexican American, I grew up witnessing the challenges that non-majority communities face when trying to access legal resources,” Wilson shares. “I knew I wanted to be an advocate for those communities, and attending law school felt like the most effective way to make a difference. I wanted to be in a position where I could sit down with clients, listen to their stories, and make an immediate impact.”

When it came time to choose a law school, Wilson was drawn to Minnesota Law for its sense of community and shared commitment to supporting one another. “This was my first time leaving Colorado, so I wanted a place where I felt safe and supported,” she recalls. “When I visited Minnesota Law, I immediately sensed that this was a close-knit community. Students and faculty spoke openly about the collaborative environment, and that really resonated with me. I knew this was a place where I could thrive.”

During her time at Minnesota Law, Wilson has embraced the hands-on experiential learning opportunities available. She is currently working at Hennepin County Adult Representation Services (ARS), where she helps provide civil public defense in cases involving evictions, child protection, guardianships, child support, immigration, and civil commitments. “It’s incredible that I can earn academic credit while doing this kind of work,” she says. “My time at Hennepin County Adult Representation Services has confirmed my passion for providing accessible legal services. Whether I end up in government or at a legal aid organization, my goal is to ensure that underrepresented communities have a voice in the legal system.”

Wilson's work as a certified student attorney at ARS has given her invaluable real-world experience. “I represent clients in court, assist with settlements, and conduct client interviews. I love being able to work directly with people and guide them through some of the toughest times in their lives.”

A significant factor in Wilson’s ability to pursue a public interest career is the scholarship support she received. “Receiving scholarship support has been life-changing for me,” she reflects. “Being the first in my family to attend law school, I was overwhelmed by the financial aspect. Not having to worry about tuition has allowed me to fully focus on my studies and my passion for public defense. I’m not burdened by loans—I can just focus on becoming the best advocate I can be.”

Wilson expresses immense gratitude to the donors who made her education possible. “Thank you for making my law school dream a reality. Your generosity allows first-generation students like me to pursue their goals and break through barriers that might otherwise hold us back. I’m honored to be part of the Minnesota Law community, and I can’t wait to pay it forward by giving back to my community.”

As she approaches graduation, Wilson remains deeply committed to public service and is eager to continue her work in public defense. “I’m incredibly grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had at Minnesota Law, and I’m excited to continue this journey after I graduate.”
