The Class of 2028 arrives with impressive academic accomplishments, including a median GPA of 3.88 and a median LSAT score of 171. Representing 120 undergraduate colleges and universities, the incoming class hails from rural towns, suburban neighborhoods, and large cities — and everywhere in between.
Incoming 1Ls join Minnesota Law with diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives — nearly a quarter of the incoming class (23%) identify as students of color. A record 37% of our incoming 1Ls identify as LGBTQ+, and 58% of the class of 2028 identify as students of color, LGBTQ+, and/or first-generation college graduates, or a combination of all three.
Minnesota Law’s Student Affairs team kicked off orientation week with a welcome session for students, who heard from Assistant Dean of Students Jay Wong, Assistant Dean of Admissions Robin Ingli, Law Council President Nikita Deep ’26, Law Council Vice President John Patterson ’27, members of the Minnesota Law faculty, and Dean William McGeveran.

“We are thrilled to welcome the incredible class of 2028 to our Minnesota Law community,” said William McGeveran, dean and William S. Pattee Professor of Law, during the opening session of 1L orientation. “By coming to law school, you raised your hand and volunteered to help respond to some of the nation’s and the world’s most serious problems. You are equipping yourself with the knowledge, the skills, and the understanding to contribute to solutions. To uphold the rule of law. To advance equity and justice. And doing so will become your duty. Your great power will give you great responsibility,” he said. “Always remember — you belong here. We wouldn’t have admitted you unless we were completely confident that you have the skills and character needed to join this extraordinary incoming class.”

During orientation week, the Class of 2028 met with their sections and learned about student resources and organizations. They met with the Career Center to begin working on their resumes. Students learned about the importance of legal research and writing, as well as the value of academic resources, including structured study groups. Most importantly, they started to get to know each other along with faculty, alumni, and staff who make up our great Minnesota Law community.
