Minnesota Law presents the 2025 Matheson Lecture in Corporate Governance, featuring a timely and insightful discussion on the evolving role of the general counsel in today’s complex corporate landscape.
With a lecture entitled “Challenges for Today’s General Counsel,” James L. Chosy ‘89 from U.S. Bank—drawing on over 22 years of experience as a public company general counsel—will reflect on the shifting demands and responsibilities of the role.

James L. Chosy '89

Jim Chosy ‘89 is Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel of U.S. Bancorp, the parent company of U.S. Bank, where he is responsible for the company’s legal affairs.
Chosy is a member of the National Council for the American Theater, the board of directors of Equal Justice Works, the Fund for Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (and chairs its Corporate Advisory Committee), and the general counsel advisory committee of the Bank Policy Institute. He is also a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, the advisory council of Diversity Lab, and the board of visitors of the College of Letters & Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has previously served as a member and chair of the board of directors of the Clearing House Association, the University of Minnesota Law School, and the Children’s Theater Company. His recognitions include the University of Minnesota’s Alumni Service Award (2012), the Lead by Example Award from the National Association of Women Lawyers (2019), the In-House Counsel Lifetime Achievement Award from Minnesota Lawyer (2020), the Exemplar Award from the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (2021), the shortlist for outstanding contribution to diversity and inclusion from Chambers D&I Awards (2021, 2022 and 2023), the Scales of Justice Award from Equal Justice Works (2023), and Honoree of the Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid Law Day Dinner (2024).
He received his J.D. degree magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota in 1989, where he served as an editor of the Minnesota Law Review. He is also a 1986 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
