Topics in Law: Human Rights & Health Advocacy

This course meets with PUBH 7200-001 on the following dates: Jan 26, Feb 9, 23, Mar 16, 30, Apr 13, 27, May 4.

The aspirational framework of universal human rights is a frequently referenced concept in advocacy. Using a human rights framework can tie local efforts into larger, international campaigns to protect and advance human dignity. Professionals across disciplines, including public health, medicine, and law, increasingly consider advocacy a fundamental component of their professional identity and must work together to develop effective campaigns. The Minnesota Advocacy Project (MAP) curriculum includes 7 workshops in which participants learn about human rights, social determinants of health, and advocacy strategies with an emphasis on translating these concepts into action. This interdisciplinary collaboration uses small group activities and simulation to practice the concrete tactics and skills of effective individual, community, and legislative advocacy to address inequities.
