Legal Writing II – 6104

Fall 2020

Legal Writing II is designed to help students improve their legal writing skills in a variety of aspects: objective memos, legal briefs, law school exams, and other frequently used aspects of legal writing.

The course regularly meets during the first portion of the semester. During this initial portion of class, students complete multiple short written assignments, and a peer review exercise. Each assignment gives students an opportunity to practice and refine their legal writing skills with feedback from an instructor.

During the second portion of the course, the class will not meet, but students have 3-4 individual conferences with an instructor for feedback on legal writing II assignments and a piece of writing in another course, for example a 2L writing project (either a journal note or a moot court brief.)

During the final portion of the course, students refine and practice their legal writing for law school exams. In addition to short preparatory assignments, the class meets twice to practice writing for law school exams. Class meetings end at least two weeks prior to the study period, so as not to interfere with exam preparation. The final writing assignment in the course is due after the exam period ends, to allow students sufficient time to study for finals.
