Tuition & Financial Aid 2024-2025

All residency decisions are made by the University of Minnesota Residency Office, not by the Law School. Although all residency requests are reviewed by the Residency Office on a case-by-case basis, factors that have been known to establish residency include

• Employment and paying taxes in Minnesota
• Owning a home in Minnesota
• A Minnesota driver's license
• Having a partner or spouse also living and working in Minnesota

Resident tuition is offered to qualifying residents of South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Manitoba upon completion of proper documentation with the state and University.  A student's home state makes the reciprocity determination.

• Wisconsin residents should contact the State of Wisconsin Higher Education Aids Board
• South Dakota residents should contact the South Dakota Board of Regents
• Manitoba residents should contact the University of Minnesota Office of Admissions

Scholarships are based on admission applications and are awarded at the time of admission. Admitted students are reviewed for a scholarship at the time of admittance; no separate application is required. For questions, please contact the Law School Admissions Office at jdadmissions@umn.edu.

• Law School scholarships range from $5,000 to full-tuition.
• Law students are not eligible for federal or state grants. However, you may qualify for gift aid by researching and applying for outside grants and scholarships. See the One Stop Scholarships page for more information.

As part of a land-grant university, the University of Minnesota Law School has always been committed to public service. With the support of the Robina Foundation, the Law School extends this commitment by creating a seamless path from admission to full-time employment for students interested in pursuing public interest careers through the Robina Public Interest Scholars Program.  More information can be found on the Robina Public Interest Scholars website.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents can complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for federal loans. Complete the FAFSA after October 1 prior to the fall semester you are admitted. See details at One Stop: Receiving Financial Aid.

• Complete the FAFSA online form after you have completed your federal tax return. The federal school code for the University of Minnesota is 003969.
• Law students are considered for two federal loans: the unsubsidized loan (annual limit $20,500) and the Grad Plus loan (no annual limit, but cannot exceed the cost of attendance).

• Loans are awarded to help meet educational costs that are not met by other aid, such as scholarships or earnings.
