The 2019 Stein Lecture: U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan
Elena Kagan, Associate Justice, was born in New York, New York, on April 28, 1960. She received an A.B. from Princeton in 1981, an M. Phil. from Oxford in 1983, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1986. She clerked for Judge Abner Mikva of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit from 1986-1987 and for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court during the 1987 Term. After briefly practicing law at a Washington, D.C. law firm, she became a law professor, first at the University of Chicago Law School and later at Harvard Law School. She also served for four years in the Clinton Administration, as Associate Counsel to the President and then as Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. Between 2003 and 2009, she served as the Dean of Harvard Law School. In 2009, President Obama nominated her as the Solicitor General of the United States. A year later, the President nominated her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on May 10, 2010. She took her seat on August 7, 2010.

TICKET DELIVERY
Please review the information below on how you'll receive your ticket.
1. Will Call - If you selected Will Call during your ticket order, your ticket will be available for pick-up at the Will Call windows located on both the ground level, east and west side of Northrop. Please be prepared to show identification. We highly encourage you not to wait until the day of the event to pick-up your ticket. Northrop is open for ticket pick-up Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
2. Print at Home (Delayed Fulfillment) - If you selected Print at Home during your ticket order, your ticket will be emailed to you at the address listed during your registration in approximately 7-10 business days. You will need to print the PDF attachment in the email and bring the paper copy with you for admission. Tickets can not be scanned from a mobile device.

This event will follow a staged ticket release as follows:
- Priority registration will be given to University of Minnesota Law School students, faculty, and staff beginning Monday, September 9 at 10 a.m. A promo code is required for priority registration and will be emailed to Law School students, faculty, and staff the morning of Monday, September 9.
- Registration will open to all University of Minnesota Law School alumni and the University of Minnesota community on Thursday, September 12 at 10 a.m. A promo code is required for priority registration. (Limit 2 tickets.)
- Law School alumni will receive the promo code in an email sent from the Law School's Alumni Office (lawalum@umn.edu) on Wednesday, September 11.
- University of Minnesota faculty and staff will receive the promo code in the Wednesday, September 11 edition of Brief.
- The promo code will be shared with University of Minnesota students the morning of Thursday, September 12 on the UMN event calendar.
- The legal community and general public will be able to reserve tickets beginning Monday, September 16 at 10 a.m. No promo code will be required. (Limit 2 tickets.)
Rules of courtroom decorum will be followed. No purses, backpacks, bags, umbrellas, cell phones, cameras, or recording devices will be allowed in the lecture hall. We encourage you not to bring them. Coat check will be available if needed.
Doors open at 3:00 p.m. Please plan to arrive early and be seated by 3:45 p.m. for the event to start on time at 4 p.m. No unfilled seats will be allowed to be saved.
The lecture will be recorded and posted on this page within one week following the event.

Surdyk’s Cafe will be open prior to the lecture. Please note that per Northrop policy no food or beverages except bottled water are allowed in the lecture hall.
Elevators are located on both the west and east side of the building, and all levels are accessible via these elevators. Wheelchair seating is available upon request when purchasing your ticket. Listening assistance devices and other services are available upon request at Coat Check. A sign language interpreter will be provided by the Law School if requested by Monday, September 30 to Laura Walton, Event Manager, at lawevent@umn.edu.
We advise you to arrive early as space fills quickly during all events. Guests are encouraged to utilize the Fourth Street Parking Ramp and Washington Avenue Parking Ramp. The Church Street Garage below Northrop has very limited public parking available on weekdays. Please note that event parking will be in effect and University parking garages/ramps will be CASH OR CHECK ONLY facilities.
If you need to be dropped off in front of Northrop, inform a police officer on duty on Church Street and follow the “Accessibility Drop-off” signs. Also note that the Church Street area has been redesigned and may not look familiar.
Northrop is also located near the East Bank Station for the Green Line. The Metro Transit website has information about bus and light rail options.
